Bayou St. John Kayaking

Bayou St. John is located in the heart of the Mid City neighborhood of New Orleans. Bayou Paddlesports runs kayak rentals with a boat launch right into Bayou St. John.

We did not make advance reservations online because we were unsure of our exact arrival. While this is probably okay on some days, you do run the risk of waiting for more kayaks to be available. We went on a Sunday morning at 9 AM because it’s still warm out right now.

They are located at the corner of Florida Avenue and Moss Street, right off Desaix Blvd. 1101 Florida Ave., New Orleans, Louisiana 70119. There is a gravel parking lot and they do have a port-o-let.

We went on a 2 hour kayak ride that takes you out along city park and Bayou homes. There are many birds and jumping fish. It’s a great way to spend some relaxing time with nature in the heart of the city.

This is an easy kayak ride for all levels and skill ability. You can also bring your dog.

Tips

  • Bring Water
  • Leave your phone in the car and bring a waterproof camera. They do have plastic bags for phones and keys, but make sure you’re not going to drop them in the water, your phone or your keys.
  • If it’s sunny, bring a hat.
  • Don’t forget the sunscreen.
  • Bring a granola bar or something else to snack on. It’s two hours on the water.
  • Get single kayaks so that you can stop when you want to stop and row when you want to row and go where you want to go and you aren’t relying on your buddy.
  • Wear shoes that have a bit of grip because getting in and out of the water can be slippery.
