Palmetto Island State Park is located in Abbeville, Louisiana about a 3 hour drive from New Orleans. It’s a good spot to stay especially if you’re going to do the drive to south west Louisiana. We used it as a launch spot into a longer trip out west.
A good thing to note is that this park is located in a rural area. The closest place to get supplies is at the Bon Amis Grocery located a 26-minute drive, 15 miles, OUTSIDE the park. We purchased some small packs of firewood there. While you are allowed to pick up wood off the ground, if you are like us and like longer bonfires then supplementing it with logs from the store always helps keep the fire going.
The park itself is named after the palmetto palms that cover the park.
There are wild hogs in the park. You will see them frequently near the main entrance grazing and popping out of the forest. There are some small trails here. Of note the trails were soggy when we were there, so we couldn’t do the entire hike because they were a bit flooded out. It’s definitely something to keep in mind if you’re heading out there after a rain.
This park is spacious for camping and has some nice small hiking. I would definitely stay here again, especially as a stop for a longer trip out to south west Louisiana beaches.
